Climbing Crib Goch: The Knife-Edge Ridge That Changes You

Snowdonia

It's not the highest peak in Snowdonia. But the Crib Goch arete — a blade of rock with a 1,000ft drop on either side — is the most exhilarating mile in Wales.

The path from Pen-y-Pass car park starts innocuously enough. A well-worn track, thousands of boots before yours, the kind of trail that lulls you into thinking this is just another mountain walk. Then the ridge appears.

Crib Goch — Red Ridge in Welsh — is a Grade 1 scramble that forms the northeastern arm of the Snowdon Horseshoe. At its narrowest, the arete is barely a foot wide, with the Llanberis Pass dropping away to your left and Glaslyn glinting far below to your right.

Most people who attempt it describe the same thing: a moment, somewhere near the middle, where the rational mind goes quiet and something older takes over. Your hands find holds you didn't consciously choose. Your feet move with a confidence that surprises you.

The descent into the Snowdon summit is almost anticlimactic after the ridge. But look back at what you've crossed — that thin line of rock against the sky — and you'll understand why people come back to Snowdonia again and again.

Practical note: Crib Goch is not a route for beginners, poor weather, or anyone uncomfortable with exposure. Check the forecast, start early, and if in doubt, hire a guide. The mountain will still be there when you're ready.
